Hymn of the Righteous Sufferer

(ca. 1770–600 BCE)

Unlike the Enuma Elish creation epic, there are no contemporaneous references to this poem, so we simply do not know the intended audience. Since several copies exist, we can speculate that it was a classic tale widely known from Nineveh to Sultantepe. Today, the hymn is studied by scholars specializing in Akkadian studies, religion, ancient history, and many other disciplines.
