Glossary
- freedmen former slaves who had been emancipated at the conclusion of the Civil War
- free negroes blacks who had been emancipated by their owners, or the children of emancipated parents prior to the start of the Civil War
- lewd characterized by immorality or vulgarity
- wanton reflecting a lack of discipline or a refusal to submit to the formal or informal controls placed on individuals living in a civil society
- lascivious reflecting an inclination toward lust or lewdness
- mulatto a general term used to refer to people of mixed race, though it specifically refers to anyone who had at least one great-grandparent who was black
- pauper a term used mainly before the twentieth century to refer to poor or indigent people
- tippling shops businesses that sold liquor by either the glass or the bottle
