UN Security Council Resolution 242 (1967)

UN Security Council Resolution 242 was passed on November 22, 1967, in response to the Six-Day War. The purpose of the UN resolution was to outline a process for achieving peace in the Middle East by reducing the belligerency of the combatants and establishing secure territorial boundaries. UN Security Council Resolution 242 served as a blueprint for Middle East peace efforts throughout the decades that followed.

The Six-Day War, which began on June 5 of 1967 and continued until a cease-fire was called on June 10, pitted Israel against the combined forces of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria, with lesser involvement by other Arab states. The conflict was the latest in a series of conflicts between the Jewish state of Israel and its Arab neighbors since the founding of Israel in 1948.
