Audience

The audience of Jackson's proclamation was broad. The proclamation was directed not only to the people of South Carolina but to a national audience as well, including politicians who flirted with the doctrine in the other southern states, unionists in the South to whom Jackson wanted to assure of federal support, and protectionists who supported the tariff.
