Barack Obama: “The American Promise”

Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president on August 28, 2008, in a new speech, “The American Promise,” with a familiar message. The address, delivered before a record crowd of more than eighty thousand at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, summarized the key themes of his campaign—his unlikely candidacy, the promise that all Americans could achieve their dreams, the need for a combination of effective government and individual responsibility, and the imperative of replacing business as usual with a politics of hope and change.
