Paul Taylor: “Again the Covered Wagon”

( 1935 )

Audience

“Again the Covered Wagon” was published in the July 1935 issue of Survey Graphic. The magazine was launched in 1921 and from that date until 1932 it was published as a supplement to The Survey. It became a separate publication in 1932 and remained so until it ceased publication in 1952. The magazine published articles about a wide range of political and social issues, including labor and unions, poverty, the working class, anti-Semitism, education, crime, the economy, and political reform. It played a major role in defining the Harlem Renaissance with its issue in 1925, “Harlem: Mecca of the New Negro.” A regular contributor was social reformer and activist Jane Addams. Progressive in tone and content, the magazine's classified ads included a directory of social agencies, ads for tours to the Soviet Union, and lists of schools of social work. Thus, the audience for the article would likely be progressively minded readers interested in public affairs as well as policy makers in the federal government and in California.
