Proclamation of the Algerian National Liberation Front - Milestone Documents

Proclamation of the Algerian National Liberation Front

( 1954 )

Audience

Delivered as a radio address, the proclamation was intended to reach both Algerian and international audiences. It notified the Algerian audience that the direct action of the conflict had begun and encouraged others to join the fight. At the same time, it put the French government on notice that Algeria was serious about securing its independence. It also proclaimed to the world that Algeria was seeking its independence. That world audience included the neighboring countries of Morocco and Tunisia, the Muslim world, other international countries who might aid the Algerians, and other African colonies that were interested in their own independence.
