  • ADONAI a commonly used Hebrew name for God, usually translated as “Lord” to suggest God’s mastery
  • EL, ELOHIM, EHEIEH, ELOAH VA-DAATH … various names for God, most derived from Hebrew or pseudo-Hebrew and some possibly corruptions of “Yahweh”
  • Esau the son of Isaac and brother of Jacob, who was cheated of his birthright
  • five books of Moses the Torah, or the first five books of the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy)
  • Ioh‚ Grevis a putative Babylonian philosopher
  • Jacob in the Old Testament, the son of Isaac and the father of the twelve tribes of Israel
  • Joseph the favored son of Jacob in the Old Testament
  • Joshua Moses’ successor as leader of the Israelites, best remembered for having stayed the course of the sun
  • Kerubim … Seraphim orders of angels
  • Land of Mizraim the Hebrew name for Egypt
  • Methratton an angel, possibly the one spoken of in Exodus 23:21
  • Moses the leader and lawgiver of the Israelites, remembered primarily for having brought the Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai
  • Noah a good man whom God saved from the flood that destroyed humankind

  • pass dryshod through the Red Sea … a reference to the parting of the Red Sea by Moses

  • Sephiroth literally, “enumeration,” or, in Jewish mysticism, the ten attributes or emanations through which God reveals himself
