Treaty of Fort Pitt - Milestone Documents

Treaty of Fort Pitt

( 1778 )

Audience

The written version of the Treaty of Fort Pitt was intended primarily for the U.S. government. It secured concessions from the Delawares that benefited the United States and that were noted in a manner deemed appropriate for the purpose. Given the subsequent complaints by the Delawares, however, it appears as if the version of the treaty translated to them during the negotiations at Fort Pitt, at least in some aspects, differed significantly from the written version. The intention of this oral version of the treaty appears to have been to secure Delaware approval of U.S. demands. One could thus say that there were two treaties, and each had a different audience.
