Doc of the Day: Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Order of the Day
06/06/10
On June 6, 1944, U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower issued his Order of the Day, a succinct yet stirring call to arms for the Allied forces participating in the D-Day invasion. “You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade,” he told the vast armada of 176,000 men and 20,000 vehicles setting sail from England toward the beaches of Normandy, France. “The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.” The successful D-Day invasion helped turn the tide in favor of the Allies in World War II.
