Doc of the Day: George W. Bush’s Mission Accomplished Speech

05/01/10

On May 1, 2003, President George W. Bush made a speech from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in which he declared that “Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.” This address became known as Bush’s Mission Accomplished speech because that congratulatory message appeared on a large banner that festooned the bridge of the ship.

Many observers felt that Bush’s declaration of victory was premature, and later events have borne that out. U.S. military operations in Iraq have continued well beyond the end of Bush’s presidency. From the time Bush made his speech through the end of 2009, the conflict cost an estimated $700 billion and claimed the lives of more than 4,000 Americans.
