04/26/10
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations whose mission is “to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world,” officially came into being on April 26, 1970. It was established by the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, which took effect on that date and was eventually signed by 184 countries. WIPO’s authority covers a wide range of creative works, from patented technology and pharmaceutical products to copyrighted material such as books, films, and software.
