In the News: Barack Obama Signs Landmark Health-Care Reform Bill
03/28/10
On March 23, 2010, President Barack Obama achieved one of his administration’s top policy goals when he signed a historic health-care reform bill into law. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is one of the widest-reaching pieces of social legislation signed in decades. “We have now just enshrined … the core principle that everybody should have some basic security when it comes to their health care,” Obama declared in his remarks upon signing the measure.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act places new restrictions on health-insurance companies that limit their ability to increase rates, drop patients who become sick, and deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. It also establishes government-run health-insurance exchanges to increase competition and reduce premiums, and provides tax breaks to middle-class families and small business owners to help offset the cost of coverage.
