Today in History: Ulysses S. Grant Is Born
04/27/10
Ulysses S. Grant—a decorated Union general during the Civil War and the 18th president of the United States—was born in Ohio on April 27, 1822. Grant led the Army of the Potomac in a number of key Civil War battles and accepted the surrender of Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia to conclude the conflict. Grant described the strategy that guided his actions in his 1865 Final Report of Military Operations.
After being elected president in 1868, Grant outlined his views on the challenges of postwar Reconstruction in his First Inaugural Address. Although he won reelection in 1872, Grant showed little of the decisiveness that had made him a great military leader during his presidency. He died in 1885, a few days after completing his memoirs.
