In the News: U.S. Conservatives Release Competing Statements of Principles

02/28/10

In an effort to maintain conservative opposition to Democratic President Barack Obama’s policies and restore Republican control of the U.S. Congress in the 2010 midterm elections, several conservative candidates and organizations put forth statements outlining their main principles and priorities in early 2010.

On February 5, for instance, high-profile conservative speakers at the National Tea Party Convention promised to follow the Contract from America, a statement of conservative goals and values constructed with the input of online supporters. On February 17, just prior to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a group of conservatives led by former U.S. attorney general Edwin Meese issued the Mount Vernon Statement. This document proclaimed the signers’ support for the conservative principles of limited government, individual liberty, free enterprise, strong national defense, and family values.

These and other recent statements of conservative principles recall the 1994 Contract with America, a document released by Speaker Newt Gingrich and House Republicans prior to that year’s Congressional elections. (We are unable to display the text of the document at this time. To view the text, please visit this website: http://www.house.gov/house/Contract/CONTRACT.html.) The Contract with America’s appeal to voters was widely credited with helping the Republican Party gain control of Congress for the first time in 40 years.
