Bhagavad Gita - Milestone Documents

Bhagavad Gita

( ca. 200 BCE–200 CE )

Audience

The Mahabharata has been sung or recited orally to all classes in India for many centuries and continues to be retold today in the popular Indian media. The Gita, however, is often read independently of the epic in India and more and more across the world. Its original intended audience was Hindus and likely included yoga practitioners, devotees of Krishna, and other seekers of truth about God, reality, and enlightenment. Today the Gita remains popular among the Indian masses and across the world. In India, it is read or recited by devotees of Krishna and other Hindu gods and may be read by anyone from childhood to old age as a guide to right living. In the West, it is also popular with a wide variety of audiences, from religious seekers to academics, social activists, and yoga practitioners, who may profess to any or no religious faith.
