Glossary

  • Abba: a name infrequently used in the Bible to refer to God the Father
  • Apocrypha: any of the various Bible-like books that, for various reasons, are not accepted as scriptural
  • divers: diverse, assorted
  • justification: in Christian theology, God’s act of declaring or making a sinner righteous before God
  • Lamb: Christ
  • paschal lamb: a lamb the Israelites were to eat with particular rites as a part of the Passover celebration; generally regarded as a prefigurement of Christ
  • supererogate: to perform more than a required duty or more than is asked for
  • Surety: guarantor; in Christian theology, the concept that Christ functioned as a surety for undeserving sinners by dying for their sins
  • vouchsafeth: to grant a right, benefit, or outcome
